Josh was the face of Engadget. It's sad to see him go. That being said, Engadget's writing quality has been steadily declining over the past few months, so they have to turn things around.

If it's truly from Italy, maybe some idiot bought it not knowing it was facunlocked, and has been preserving the baseband LOL.
Or
It's foreign and was simply sold in Italy, hence not being factory unlocked. The OP is being kind of a space cadet with his answers so it's hard to say right now.

Hey guys. I just picked up a Macintosh Plus off craigslist, along with an SE-20 (I believe that's the name) SCSI hard drive. I plugged it all in and turned it on, hard drive first, then the computer. The computer did it's little "ping" dealio when I turned it on, and the hard drive screamed what I can only guess is reading the operating system, then stops, which I would assume means it booted. I'm guessing this is a completely working system, minus the lemon of a monitor.
Basically, I want to ask the guys who love these machines: Any tips for taking it apart to check on it? Is this a known issue with a known resolution?
PS. I lol'd when I saw the keyboard connector.

$50 !! Are they crazy. There's no way I'm going to pay $50 for this apps. And the people that pay $50 for it are probably .................... just curious. :D
update: I change my mind. I could see how this apps would benefit me. with this apps, I don't have to be on the computer all the time. just open this app and its like a tutor. I hope it can help me with Calculus 4 and Statistic. and I hope they meant $4.99 instead of $49.99
It must have been a typo, right Wolfram?
Oh, if it could also help with coding and english grammar, that would really convince me that it is worth $50.
update II: now I understand why it's $50.

Hello all, I am brand new to Mac with a Macbook Air. I have managed to fumble through and edit one of my wildlife videos. There is one question and a couple of related items that I have not found an anwer to.
Finishing a Project - This renders in 4 different formats for me, 1080, 720, large, and medium. I understand that the different formats are for different applications, but I don't need all four versions for every video.
Is there a way to either choose a format or delete the ones not being used.
Thanks much. :)

bida, bida, bida-da-dum....boo!
I've got as far as the checkout at Apple's online store before remembering that I can't remember the last time I would've had a use for it. If I take the plunge it'll mean I've got to find time to do some exercise then I think would the money be better spent on a rowing machine? But I'm not going to use that unless I've got an iPod to listen to.
So you can hear the voices too, at least that makes me feel better.
Yes, LOUD voices...
I don't freaking need the thing. I have got to have it.
Maybe I should see how long I can go before I go mental.

Thanks for sharing your set up. So do you have to each one separately to see what is due, what you need? Or do they somehow overlap each other?
michelle
I use Due and Todo.
Due's great for repeating tasks and reminding me of something I really could easily forget to do were my phone not beeping at me every minute, but it's too simple for projects.
Todo's better for projects, and I like that choosing a due date is easier and faster, and that I can easily modify a few tasks all at the same time rather than one by one (like say postponing a few tasks till later).
Most importantly both back up online, so were I to lose my iPhone or do a complete factory restore (I've had to do that twice when my iPhone back up had saved the bug that crashed my iPhone in the first place), I can easily restore all my reminders and tasks.

I wonder how the mbp 2010 rates in bootcamp and parallels.

Ashman, any chance you could explain how to do the things you described a little better?
And I use my MacBook for mainly web surfing and managing my music collection to sync with my iPhone. I find myself using my phone for a vast majority of my Internet browsing, and I have my media library to the point where it doesn't need much tweaking. If a new album or artist hits that I absolutely must have, I can either purchase the album or wait.
As I said, this should only be a few month period where I am without a MacBook, and if need be I have access to PC's at friends and family's house.
I don't do any editing, gaming, or anything really requiring a full fledged OS. although I plan on having one.
And oh, Ashman, the computers I'll have available to me will almost guaranteed to be PC's. So, I'll need a solution windows friendly.
Thanks.
If you're only doing those simple things with your computer, why do you need to upgrade? If anything upgrade the internals, not the entire system.
I have an upgraded blackbook (same as yours I think) and the thing runs flawlessly; 1080p video, the computer never slows down and it has great battery life. Upgrading your computer will give you better overall specs but if you don't want to waste money and since you're only doing trivial (concerning cpu) tasks, an upgrade wouldn't be cost effective.
Concerning the iPad; it is nowhere near a replacement for a computer; it's great for consuming data like surfing the web, listening to music, watching tv,a nd looking at pictures, however when you need to do "real" work or something that requires composition, movement, and just general activities, the iPad falls far, far too short.

how many different apple ID's can you authorize on a single copy of iTunes? My husband and I each have our own apple IDs but the old "what's yours is mine and what's mine is yours" thing applies, and if he buys a CD or an app I want to use, then dammit, I want a copy! LOL
So how can I get his stuff on my computer and mine on his?

I am getting an error when trying to empty my trash bin with an external hard drive attached and turned on. The message is, "The operation could not be completed because an unexpected error has occurred. (error code - 8003)". When I turn off the external hard drive (which happens to be my Time Machine backup drive" the trash disappears from my trash bin. That's the only way I can remove files from my internal hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to *restore* the iPod in iTunes, restoring will wipe all data on the iPod, there is no way around that. Using a virtual machine *will* work, as long as it has USB support, which all the major VM apps do have.
RE SP3: Maybe..? Just try try it, it will probably work.

Good question - specs follow:
MacBook Pro
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Ram
250 GB HDD
Those are the most general specs - not sure how to get more data... but let me know if needed.
Is going refurb a bad idea? I was thinking that as soon as I use it, it is "used" anyway...

Sorry for the clearly noob question. Ive read through other recent threads on Lion server and the xserve etc., and Im not really sure that I know much more than I started.
I have been managing a very simple OSX Server in a research lab, and Im looking to set up a new one in the near future. The current setup is a Mac Pro running OSX Server, with several rack-mounted large RAID drives (both eSATA and FW800) and a backup-UPS battery powersource. The primary function is to have a central storage space for large amounts of imaging and other data available to multiple machines both locally and off-site. Perhaps its working as our own mini cloud for 20 or so users. We also manage a common iCal and Address Book on the server, but its primary function is data storage and network sharing of the data.
As Im in a position to start over again to put together a new system, Ive been looking at options. xServe is gone, and from reading the thread on the Active SAN metadata controller I dont think that it is what Im looking for (right?). If I understand correctly, Lion will have some relatively simple server features (likely) built in.
These are my questions:
1) Since data sharing it the primary function, is a server really what I want? I know I could do something with a simpler networked storage device, but it seems to me that a server does a better job of controlling access and managing multiple RAID drives.
2) I have some experience with OSX Server, but no experience with any other sort. Should I be looking outside the Mac-verse for a simple data-sharing server that will work for both Macs and PCs.
3) Is a Mac Mini running server a viable option? One advantage is that I could mount this to a rack. Still have to find some sort of power backup solution. My main concern is the speed by which the data can be shared over the network with other machines. I suspect that the real bottleneck is the network connection, not the mini, but Im a noob and guessing here. It seems to me that the method used to connect a mini to the RAID drives would also impact this seriously. I dont see any eSATA ports on the mini, and that should be the fastest, right?
I know that there are a lot of serious server administrators here, and these sorts of noob questions are likely very nave. I appreciate any advice.
Thanks
